The Stan Hywet is a grand historical Tudor revival mansion resting on 70 acres of incredible landscaped gardens and grounds in Akron, Ohio. Construction of Stan Hywet Hall began in 1912. The owners, industrialist and co-founder of Goodyear Tire and Rubber F.A. Seiberling and his wife Gertrude, moved into their new home in November of 1916. As the Latin motto "Non Nobis Solum" ("Not for Us Alone") carved in stone above the front entrance suggests, the Seiberlings have shared the estate with family and friends with warmth and welcome for over forty years. In keeping with the motto, and to perpetuate the generous spirit of the Seiberlings, the estate was given to the Stan Hywet Hall Foundation and opened to the public as a museum and civic center. In 1989, the Akron Garden Club, the Wolle Foundation and the Knight Foundation voted to fund the restoration of the gardens. But let us imagine, as did the author, an altered history and what could have come to be. What if the estate had been handed down through the generations? And what if a family heir (fictional character of course) now owned it? And what if the once peaceful estate became the setting for envy, greed and betrayal? And what if the once beautiful gardens now nurtured spite, jealousy, hostility, and bitterness? Combining history and fiction, "Not For Us Alone" is a mystery story portraying the ‘what if’s’ and the ‘what might have been’ at the Stan Hywet. Each chapter is illustrated by a new segment of the 18th century style pictorial sampler. As the story unfolds and the sampler evolves, the mystery is revealed.
